In De Disco

Noodweer were a Dutch pop/rock band most famous for this hit from 1983, which is almost a joke-release, their take on dancemusic and disco and whatnot. I have no idea what they're saying; all I understand is what they repeat in the chorus: "In De Disco", which, using my extensive understanding of different cultures co-existing in the habitable world today, probably translates as "In The Disco".

The track is very good, but probably rocks even more when played loud in the middle of a mix. If I sit down and listen reeaally carefully I don't like it as much (maybe 97%, I don't understand the lyrics, see), but as a kinda jolly thing to nod your head to and shake your sexy body, it's gooood.

And it's begging for an edit, to maybe cut out those scat-parts and make it all a bit more compact, maybe, but that being said, it's good stuff and it's different from a lot of the good stuff, and I'm glad they released it.

It's also a very likely inspiration for all that dance-rock that the world fell in love with a few years ago -- although I'm not sure just how many people have ever heard it.

boy, seems like ages ago when I was singin' along to this, thanks for reminding me; the band was Dutch, but it was quite a hit here in Belgium too; sorry you don't get the lyrics, they're hilarious!

Yeah, I wish I understood the lyrics...

The track is good, nevertheless.

It's the same with MC Solaar, I guess. He raps in french, which I don't speak, but I love his music.

By coincidence I 'ran' into your site.
How in the world did our 12inch hit found his way to Iceland? Like you already said, it's a pity you don't understand the lyrics, because that was the main reason it became a hit.
Greetings from Luc (drummer of Noodweer)

Wow, thanks for your comment Luc!

I actually got in from the almighty internet after reading about it somewhere. :) I bet there are some people back in Iceland who have created some sweat while listening to the track.

I've listened to the track a lot, the parts I've gotten until now are "durex" and "oe oe", and the more I've listened, the more I'm ready for the "grrrrr" parts.

I finally ran the lyrics through an online translator, so...

...I think the song is a story about Jan who loves to hang out at the disco. He wants to talk to girls but it doesn't really work out (someone gets a seizure?). Just in case he always has durex in his back pocket.

People say "hey, you in the blue jacket, dance!" but he doesn't want to. "I have still no alpha Romeo but I steal the show in the disco" (hah, I love that).

Then he tells people to have a good night, mentiones flower pots, and hopes that their parents don't wake up when they get home?

In the disco, indeed.

But anyways, I'm honored that you commented here. I'm a fan.

Luc Everwijn:

Well Halli, you are close to the main idea of the song. Jan is indeed the loser who wants to chat up birds in the discotheque, but fails to do so. That is the actual story of the song. The word 'gono' in the refrain is even in Holland often misunderstood. Gono stands for gonnorea. So 'Durex or otherwise a veneric disease in the disco'. But Jan is not the one that is doing the talking in the song. Our singer steps into the roll of the 'so called' popular discjockey and is imitating their rapid tongue and their 'nasal' way of speaking. In short, he is making a fool of that kind of discjockeys.
But a good translation of the song is hard. When I've reached my pension I might give it a try.
Greetings from Luc

Fans in Iceland? Amazing... I'm the daughter of the bass-guiter player and I was thinking that if you like this song of Noodweer, you might also like the other songs? Maybe you like it if I send you a copy of their 'greatest-hits' cd? On the one condition that you spread the Noodweer-vibe through all of Iceland, ofcourse!

Let me know!

Hannah
